Lions, Lady Lions Show Lots of Hart in Season Opener
by Scottie Mullins

Well folks, football is over and now it’s time for some basketball. The girls have been practicing since the beginning of the year and were looking forward to their first game of the year. It just so happened that the Hart Lady Longhorns would be their first victim of the regular season. On the way to their first victory, Breann Ybarra busted out with a double-double having 22 points and 12 steals (she also contributed 7 rebounds). She had some help though; coming from Whitnie Stephenson and Shawndi Kubica each contributing 9 points and 3 steals apiece.

"We were really prepared for this game after having fall ball and everything," Junior post Shawndi Kubica said.

The fallball must have really helped, because they played like they were a championship team. They stuck it to those Lady Horns 67-30

"We just went out there and played ‘our’ game," Junior guard Breann Ybarra.

Some of the girls have been on varsity since their freshman year and they know all about the "A" game and they sure did bring it.

"We played well as a team and everything was really clicking for us," Senior guard Kelly Pray said. She added, "We are looking forward to doing the same thing to Whiteface on Friday night."

Well good luck Ladies! We could really use that "W" in the win column. Give ‘em heck in Whiteface!

The Lions also faced off against Hart. They came out for pre-game with a ritual all their own what with a tip drill leading to a dunk, to even dunking it on lay-ups. The game was just as exciting. Our top performers for the boys were Junior post Dakota Bybee with 14 points; Zack Peters with 11 points; and Justin Moore with 10 points. The game had it’s ups and downs but ended up with the boys winning it 56-35.

"We have been practicing for the past two weeks and it really helped us in our first game," Senior guard Brandon McIntire said.

The boys play Whiteface as well tonight so be sure to go out and support your Lions and Lady Lions as they each look for their second wins of the season.

Lions try out their basketball skills

Last Friday the New Deal Lions basketball team had their first scrimmage. The scrimmages was set up with the Lions playing Tulia for their first game and then Hale Center , then watched Hale Center play Tulia. They did this rotation two more times. Even though they got off to a bumpy start, they ended with a bang. The only game they lost was the first one against the Tulia Hornets, but they weren’t about to let the Hornets defeat them again.

" We look real good but I think we should still concentrate on making our offense better by learning the plays more so they can just come to us naturally," said returning starter, Senior Brandon McIntire.

" These boys are such a great group of kids they are all hard workers and are willing to do anything to win," said assistant head coach, Craig Hamilton.

Senior Justin Moore says, " We have a great defensive game and we all work great together."

The guys have plenty more games so come out and support our New Deal Lions!

Meet the Lions and Lady Lions

Last week on Thursday, November 13, the Lions and Lady Lions held their annual Meet the Lions Basketball Team. Each coach came out and introduced all the Lions and Lady Lions from Junior High, to J.V up to Varsity.

"The turn out was a lot better than I expected," senior Erica Williams said.

After the students got announced, the Athletic Booster Club had cookies and punch for everybody to enjoy.

"I was really excited but nervous that this was the last time that the Seniors would be introduced together," said senior Michelle Dempsey.

The students were really pumped up to get the basketball season started and we can’t wait to see how well everyone does this year. Good Luck to everybody.
